Lara Parker provides a comprehensive special education program serving the individual academic, social, emotional, and career education needs of each of her students.
 
The Arbor program develops and implements individualized educational programs that ensure each student reaches his or her highest level of achievement and independence to help them to become contributing members of their communities.
 
Functional and life skills education are provided and an extensive career education and school-to-work transition program prepares students for adult life. Social Skills or “soft skills” are emphasized to maximize each student’s ability to participate in various social settings in the greater community.
 
With a history of serving students with disabilities, Lara’s mission, curriculum, facilities and supporters are focused on meeting the academic, career and life needs of its students and supporting their families as their children grow.

  • LifeSkills: cooking and cleaning and home maintenance in our off-campus home.
  • 4H: caring for livestock and pets on 3 acres at our off-campus home.
  • Victoria Livestock Show:  All participants in 4-H got a showmanship ribbon. Parker Williams lamb won grand champion with his official handler.
  • Student Led Chapel

  • Ryan Kremling was honored at the end of the year Crossroads Awards Ceremonies with the Christians Character Award.

  • Special Olympics Track & Field:

Over 250 athletes from all around the Crossroads and Arbor student Jack McHale carried the torch at the VISD track meet.

Out of 1,885 athletes, Ryan Ruterbories carried the torch at the state bowling opening ceremonies to represent our region for the Area 2 South Texas Region Special Olympics in Austin Texas.

Sam’s Club & HEB grocery shopping

Century Lanes for bowling competition practice

Liberty track for Special Olympics track & field practice

Drove to Houston and adopted a rescue therapy dog.

Vets Office:  Dr Beck and his staff taught us all about animal care and a puppies first visit

MISSION:

The mission of the Arbor program is to provide a personalized learning environment to special needs students age thirteen and older. We believe in leading our students into our communities with the life skills necessary to become integral and productive citizens.

GOALS:

  • Provide a welcoming and appropriate setting that enables the individual student the opportunity to grow and develop their academic and personal goals.
  • Meet the unique needs of each individual student thru small teacher to student ratios
  • Offer customized, student specific educational plans
  • Develop independence thru basic life skills
  • Build and expand skills needed in the community and job environment

Home School Terminology

THSC definition of a home schooled student:
A home schooled student predominantly receives instruction in a general, elementary or secondary education program that is provided by the parent—or a person standing in parental authority—in or through the child’s home [Texas Education Code 29.916 (a)].

The parent or person standing in parental authority might contract with outside sources in order that the student receives additional instruction. For example, a private tutor, co-op class or a college class. However, this source or these sources do not circumvent the parent’s role in determining the overall success or failure of the student.

Home school group:
All home school groups on our list seek to serve families who meet the definition of home schooling. This means their children participate in the group, but the group will not attempt to become an authority over the student’s education, per the definition of home schooling. THSC Partner Groups meet criteria as defined on THSC Types of Groups.

Private school:
Private school is a broad category of describing any non-public school. This includes traditional accredited private schools that require daily attendance and tuition, unaccredited private schools which are similar but not subject to the same accreditation requirements, home schools which are a type of private school but not regulated the same way as other types of private school, and other options that are a hybrid of these different types. For example, in a university model school, a student might attend the school 2-3 days per week and then be schooled at home for the rest of the week.
