Supporting Our Students: Early Identification & Screenings

At CCS, we believe in the power of early identification and early intervention. Catching literacy-based, behavioral, or developmental learning needs early allows us to provide targeted instructional support when it matters most—yielding academic gains almost twice as large as later intervention, while deeply protecting a child’s mental health and self-esteem.

To support this mission, CCS offers free, preliminary screenings upon request to help ensure our students have the foundation they need to succeed.

Important Information Regarding Screenings:

  • Purpose: These screenings are designed solely to identify behavioral, educational, or developmental markers that may indicate traits commonly associated with students who would benefit from further assessment.

  • Not a Diagnosis: A screening is not a psychological, medical, or formal educational diagnosis. The results should never be used to replace a comprehensive clinical evaluation by a licensed physician, psychologist, or qualified specialist.

  • Scope: CCS screenings do not constitute a formal diagnosis and cannot be used on their own to secure legal accommodations (such as an IEP, 504 plan, or medical therapy).

If you have immediate concerns about your child's development, speaking to your pediatrician is always the best first step.

CCS Academic Accommodations & Modifications

At Crossroads Christian School (CCS), we are fully committed to supporting students with diverse learning needs. We welcome and implement formal 504 Plans and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

The following list outlines common accommodations and modifications available within our online framework. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list. For questions regarding specific accommodations not detailed below, please contact Student Services:

⏱️ Pacing & Scheduling

  • Self-Paced Learning: Because CCS utilizes an online learning model, traditional "extended time" modifications on daily assignments are generally built-in. Students do not have rigid, daily due dates and can work at their own pace within the overall semester timeframes set by CCS or partnering school districts (up to 20 weeks).

  • Untimed Exams: Exams within our system are untimed, allowing students to process information without the pressure of a countdown clock. Note: Exams must be completed in one sitting, as the system does not allow a "save and resume" feature.

🛠️ Assistive Tools & Technology

  • Text-to-Speech & Audio Books: Many CCS courses feature embedded text-to-speech tools. For courses without built-in audio, students are encouraged to use their preferred assistive software or browser extensions (such as Google’s SpeakIt!). Students who benefit from audiobooks may also utilize digital copies via Kindle, Nook, Apple Books, or their local library.

  • Use of Calculators: The use of calculators on math and science assignments and exams is fully permitted if specified in the student’s formal accommodation document.

📝 Adjustments to Quizzes & Exams

  • Fewer Multiple-Choice Options: Based on a student's IEP/504 recommendations, our system or instructors can reduce the number of multiple-choice options on assessments (down to 2 choices) to reduce cognitive overload.

  • Fewer Exam Questions: If a student's plan requires a reduced workload, instructors can adjust the total number of exam questions online or utilize a printed exam format. Grading scales are dynamically re-calculated so the student's true percentage score is accurately reflected in the LMS (e.g., scoring an 18/20 on a modified exam will correctly log as a 90% in the gradebook).

  • Partial Credit Re-Grading: For students who qualify, teachers can review missed exam questions and award partial credit. In some instances, this may require the student to take a printed version of the exam to prevent the online system from automatically revealing the correct answers.

📚 Study & Instructional Support

  • Use of Notes: If outlined in their 504 or IEP, students are permitted to use their notes on exams. Furthermore, because daily quizzes are not password-protected, all CCS students are highly encouraged to refer to their reading materials and notes while completing quizzes.

  • Custom Study Guides: Upon request, teachers can provide targeted study guides for exams if they are not already embedded directly into the course curriculum.

  • Print-Based Materials: If a student requires a break from screens or interacts better with tangible paper, teachers can provide physical, printed copies of exams.

  • Assignment Retries: For non-password-protected assignments, teachers may allow students to retry a task if they scored poorly or missed a foundational component, ensuring mastery of the concept.

IEP/504 Plans

Federal law requires school districts to develop and carry out Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and 504 Plans for students who reside in their districts. Students who enroll at Crossroads Christian School (CCS) must provide the most current IEPs and/or 504 Plans. CCS’s director conducts an initial assessment of each student applying for enrollment. The initial assessment identifies many factors that impact student learning, including IEPs and 504 Plans.

Based on the information provided, the education professional assigned to the IEP or 504 Plan(s) determines how the accommodations and/or modifications assigned to the student can be supported within CCS’s digital and or classroom environment.

The documentation of a student’s plan(s) and determinations are shared with the parents/guardians, student, and as appropriate and applicable, with the assigned instructor(s). Parents/Guardians can give CCS instructors the authority to communicate directly with the assigned professionals for ongoing consultation.

CCS teachers may attend IEP/504 meetings (ARDs) for students who are enrolled in any of our programs. Our teachers can be asked to provide brief written summaries directly related to the student's progress on elements outlined in the student's provided IEP/504 Plan documents that were provided to CCS. Such requests should be submitted to our director.
